Factors That Affect Overnight Battery Duration
— and How PowerMuster Delivers More, Every Night
“Will it keep running through the night?” is the first question most prospective PowerMuster clients ask. The answer comes down to two things: how much usable energy the battery holds going into the evening, and how much the property draws down before sunrise.
Six factors govern that balance — and PowerMuster is engineered to get every one of them right.
1. Battery Chemistry and Depth of Discharge
Not every battery releases the same energy it stores. Lead-acid batteries are typically limited to 50% depth of discharge (DoD) and only 70–85% round-trip efficiency, wasting up to 30% of the energy put into them.
PowerMuster specifies Deye High-Voltage LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries, which can be safely discharged to 80–90% DoD with up to 97.6% round-trip efficiency — so a 20 kWh LFP bank delivers up to 18 kWh usable, against roughly 10 kWh from a lead-acid battery of the same size.
LFP cells are also thermally stable, contain no toxic heavy metals, and are rated for thousands of cycles (10–15+ years of daily use) compared with 500–1,000 cycles for standard lithium-ion.
2. Package Selection and Load Matching
The overnight duration is about aligning storage with the property’s real energy needs, ensuring a seamless energy experience. Rather than custom-engineering a battery bank from scratch for every enquiry (which increases the cost), PowerMuster offers three standardised packages — Homestead, Farm, and Enterprise — that together cover around 95% of rural situations.
Each combines ground-mounted solar, a 50 kW three-phase hybrid inverter, and modular high-voltage Deye LFP battery storage, scaled to the load tier it’s built for:
- PMP Homestead — 24.57 kW solar array, 25.6 kWh of battery storage. Suited to homestead-scale loads: lighting, refrigeration, communications, and general household equipment overnight.
- PMP Farm — 49.14 kW solar array, 51.2 kWh of battery storage. Suited to working farms with irrigation pumps, cool rooms, and workshop equipment drawing power overnight.
- PMP Enterprise — 73.71 kW solar array, 92.1 kWh of battery storage. Suited to full-scale, three-phase operations with heavy equipment and multiple systems running overnight.
Solar Suite’s assessment process matches each property to the right package based on its actual load profile, so clients get a system genuinely sized to their overnight draw — not undersized, not oversized, not unnecessarily expensive, and not one that falls short by 2 a.m.
3. Solar Charging Capacity — the PowerMuster Design Advantage
The single most decisive factor is how much energy goes into the battery each day, and it’s where PowerMuster differs most from a standard system. Every Pack is specified with excess TCL N-Type Bifacial panel capacity relative to the battery bank size, rather than sizing panels to bare daily demand. This delivers compounding benefits:
- The battery reaches full charge earlier in the day (often by early afternoon rather than near sunset), so more stored energy is available going into the night.
- Once the battery is full, surplus panel output is delivered directly to live farm loads — pumps, refrigeration, workshop equipment — preserving battery depth and reducing overall cycle count.
- On overcast or dusty days, the built-in headroom still brings the battery to an acceptable charge state, where a minimally sized system would only partially recharge.
- The bifacial panels capture reflected and diffuse light through their rear surface, adding generation even in less-than-ideal conditions.
4. Ambient Temperature
LFP batteries perform best within a defined temperature range; heat accelerates degradation and reduces efficiency in unprotected systems. Every PowerMuster cabinet is insulated and actively air-conditioned, keeping the Deye battery bank within its optimal range year-round, regardless of WA’s summer heat.
5. Seasonal Variation
Shorter winter days across the South West and Wheatbelt mean less daily generation. Solar Suite’s design process accounts for seasonal variation at each site when sizing the panel array, so the excess capacity built into every PowerMuster system provides an additional buffer through the winter months.
6. Battery Age and Maintenance
LFP capacity degrades very slowly across thousands of cycles, and the Deye system’s modular architecture allows individual modules to be replaced or supplemented as needed — so overnight capacity doesn’t erode as the system ages. Deye batteries are backed by manufacturer warranties covering long-term capacity retention.
Why PowerMuster Delivers More Overnight
